The Role of Air Struts
Air suspension uses an air compressor to provide compressed air to absorb shock while driving on the road. The air struts are an integral part of BMW's suspension system that help maintain the vehicle's height by resisting compression with air pressure from a compressor. Air Spring
Air springs absorb the shock of driving over bumps and potholes in the road. Their rubber parts wear and tear over time, allowing pressurized air to leak out. When driving on rough roads, this can lead to bumps because there isn't enough air to properly absorb shocks.

Another sign of a leaking air spring is the air compressor failing to shut off. This part keeps the air containing part of the suspension properly inflated and is not meant to be run all the time. If so, then it's usually trying to make up for the air leak. Also, the stance of the car will fall on the wheel where the faulty air spring is, so watch out for that.
