Induction heating is a widely used manufacturing process that is used for bonding, hardening and softening metals or other conductive materials. It is a process that offers a unique combination of speed, consistency, control and energy efficiency.
The principles of induction heating were first understood and
applied to manufacturing processes in the 1920s. During World War
II, the technology developed rapidly in response to urgent wartime
requirements for a fast and reliable process to harden metal engine
parts.
In recent years, the focus on lean manufacturing techniques and
improved quality control has led to a renewed interest in induction
technology, along with the development of precisely controlled,
all-solid-state induction power supplies.
Induction heating works by creating an alternating magnetic field
when an alternating electrical current is applied to the primary of
a transformer. According to Faraday’s Law, an electric current will
be induced if the transformer's secondary is located within the
magnetic field.
In a basic induction heating setup, an AC current is sent through
an inductor, often made of copper coil, and the part to be heated,
or the workpiece, is placed inside the inductor. The inductor
serves as the transformer primary, and the part to be heated
becomes a short circuit secondary. When a metal part enters the
magnetic field, circulating eddy currents are induced within the
part.
