A vertical axis wind turbine (or VAWT) has a main rotor shaft arranged vertically. An advantage of this arrangement is that the turbine does not need to be pointed into the wind to be effective, which is an advantage in locations where the wind direction is highly variable. This is also an advantage when the turbine is integrated into a building, as it is inherently less maneuverable. Additionally, the generator and gearbox can be placed close to the ground, using direct drive from the rotor assembly to the ground gearbox, improving maintenance accessibility.

Since the actual wind speed is variable, permanent magnet synchronous generators cannot generate electricity at a fixed frequency. Therefore, they should be connected to the grid through AC-DC-AC conversion of the power converter. That is, the generated AC power (variable in frequency and amplitude) is first rectified to fixed DC and then converted back to AC power (with fixed frequency and amplitude). It is also attractive to use these permanent magnet motors for direct drive applications. Obviously, in this case, they can eliminate the troublesome gearbox that causes most wind turbines to fail. The machine should have a larger pole count and be physically larger than a similarly rated gear machine.
