Does carbon steel go rusty?
Carbon steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, and it is this
combination that gives the steel its strength. However, carbon
steel is susceptible to rusting. Rust is a natural process that
happens when iron is exposed to oxygen and water. The oxygen causes
the iron to oxidize, or rust. The water creates a chemical reaction
with the iron that accelerates the rusting process.
Rust can occur on carbon steel if it is left unprotected from the
elements. Even though carbon steel is more resistant to rusting
than other types of steel, it can still occur if the right
conditions are present. There are several ways to protect carbon
steel from rusting, such as painting or coating it with
arust-resistant material.
