(1) Switching type lightning protector
Its operating principle is when there is no transient overvoltage
presented as a high impedance, but once the response to lightning
transient overvoltage, its impedance is suddenly changed to a low
value, allowing the lightning current to pass. Devices used for
such devices are: discharge gaps, gas discharge tubes, gate
transistors, etc.
(2) Voltage limiting type lightning arrester
Its working principle is that when there is no transient
overvoltage for high impedance, but with the increase in surge
current and voltage impedance will continue to decrease, its
current-voltage characteristics are strongly non-linear. Devices
used for such devices are: zinc oxide, varistors, suppression
diodes, avalanche diodes and other lightning protection devices are
mostly voltage limiting type.
(3) shunt type or choke type lightning arrester
Shunt type: parallel connection with the protected equipment, the
lightning impulse is presented as low impedance, while the normal
operating frequency is presented as high impedance.
Choke type: in series with the protected equipment, the lightning
impulse presents a high impedance, while the normal operating
frequency presents a low impedance.
Devices used for this type of device are: choke coils, high pass
filters, low pass filters, 1/4 wavelength shorters, etc. [1] .
By lightning protection level
Class I lightning protector: generally nominal above 30KA. There
are switching type and voltage limiting type.
Level 2 lightning protector: generally nominal between 15 - 20KA.
All voltage limiting type.
Third-level lightning arrester: generally nominal between 5 - 10KA,
are voltage limiting type.
