Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) is a kind of twisted pair, which consists of 4 pairs of insulated plastic coated copper wires. Each two of the 8 copper wires are twisted together to form a wire pair. The purpose of twisting cables together is to offset each other's electromagnetic interference. The density of twist changes circularly along the cable, which can effectively eliminate the crosstalk between wire pairs. Unshielded twisted pair has no metal shielding material and is wrapped with only one layer of insulating rubber. It is relatively cheap, flexible networking and easier to install. Generally, only unshielded twisted pair is used in generic cabling system.
