It's important to make sure that the makeup you store inside is still good to use! All makeup products have a “best by …” date, the time after opening by which you should use them up or discard them.

There are some variations based on climate and storage conditions, but here are some general timelines to keep in mind (Tip: Use a permanent ink pen to write the date you opened it right on the product itself.

Mascara and eyeliner (all types) – 3 to 6 months.
Cream, liquid, or stick foundations and concealers, cream blushes – 6 months to 1 year.
Powder-based products (e.g., blush, bronzer, highlighter, eyeshadow) – 2 to 3 years.
Lipstick, lip gloss, and lip pencils – 2 to 3 years.
Lip balm – 1 year.

Keeping your makeup brushes clean is important, too, and it's not nearly as involved as you might think.

How do I clean my makeup brush?

When was the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes? If you can't remember, it's high time to give them a thorough wash.

Just like your skin needs to be cleansed at the end of the day, makeup brushes can cling onto dirt, grime, and oils that will not only clog pores but also hinder the brushes ability to properly apply makeup.

1. Wet the bristles.

Rinse the bristles under water. Avoid getting water above the handle of the brush, which can loosen the glue over time and eventually lead to shedding bristles and ultimately, a ruined brush.

2. Gently massage in soap.

Rub your favorite cleanser onto your hand and then swirl your brush across your palm in gentle circular motions, taking care to get the entire brush saturated. You can also use a brush cleansing mat at this step.

3. Rinse clean.

After the brush is sudsed up, rinse the soap and product out. Repeat steps 1-2 if the water doesn't run clean, again, being sure the water doesn't touch your brush's handle.

4. Squeeze the water out.

Gently press on the bristles with your fingers to release excess water. Don't tug too hard!

5. Let it dry.

Lay the brush or brushes flat on a towel overnight. They'll be ready for you to use again in the morning!
