High Speed Steel (HSS) cutting tool is the cheapest and shortest life cutting tool. Compared with conventional high-speed steel, cobalt-containing high-speed steel cutting speed can be 10% higher. Cemented carbide tools are more expensive than steel, but they last longer and can machine faster and prove to be more economical in the long run. HSS tools are applicable to many applications. The development from conventional HSS to cobalt HSS to carbide can be considered very good. The use of high-speed spindles may preclude the use of HSS, and enlarge the cemented carbide tool application scope.
