What causes the bending rubber to balloon or swell up?

"Ballooning" usually happens for two reasons:

• Chemical Exposure: Prolonged exposure to improper concentrations of disinfectants, enzymatic cleaners, or using unapproved chemicals can break down the rubber compound, causing it to lose its elasticity and expand.

• Internal Air/Water Leak: If an internal air or water tube inside the bending section develops a micro-leak, air can pump into the space beneath the rubber during a procedure, causing it to inflate.
